Flash in the Pans community steel band

Flash in the Pans is a community steel band comprised mostly of adults which has performed summer concerts weekly for the past 18 years (see photos). The concerts typically support a local civic organization’s fund raising efforts. Contributions to the band and funds from the sale of tapes and CD’s have allowed the band to provide funds for the local high school to grant scholarships and student aid to a number of students in past years.

Purchase our CD's ("Original Flash", "10th Anniversary Flash" or "Street Dance") by contacting our Treasurer (bigd9@verizon.net). Proceeds go to music scholarships and promoting steel drum music in downeast Maine.

In the Shadows After Sunset

In the shadows after sunset, street dancing jumps into gear.
Shy teens gyrate by bold couples bobbing, swaying to the throb
of the Caribbean swelling from Flash in the Pans.
Steel drums spark, sticks play, hands jump from drum to drum,
nimble mallets pound the sound, figured feet catch the beat,
bobbing - weaving - tottering tops
spinning round the sound collapse to clap at song’s end.
Begin again at first beat stitching pulses of joy
into the descending dark.
Infectious rhythms cloak dancers, swayers in lawn chairs,
rockers gathered on the grass, all who pass fall under the spell
sewn into the air by steel pans in the shadows after sunset.
